Lore Deep Dive: The Oni Genocide
In the vast, sprawling history of the Edenverse, few events are as grim and formative as the event now known as the Oni Genocide. This tragic event, a brutal and systematic purge of the Oni race, serves as the dark undercurrent for many of the personal vendettas that fuel the current shadow war, particularly Il'Shihane's grudge against Adamocles Eden. This pivotal moment in history took place after the Edens had been separated for 200 years, a period of immense loss that would shape their future.
A Tragic Deception
The truth of the genocide is a horrifying tale of manipulation. The event was, in reality, a meticulously planned deception perpetrated by Lord Kargane. Fleeing from the Edens, he seized a peaceful village of humans and Oni, none of whom were part of the Oni Hegemony. He brutally imprisoned the humans and forcibly conscripted the peaceful Oni, then spread misinformation to paint the village as a hostile threat. Eva and Ado, believing they were neutralizing a dangerous enemy stronghold, attacked. They only discovered the horror of what they had done after the battle had ended. This act of cold-blooded betrayal became a lie that would haunt the Edens and spark a future of vengeance.
The Seeds of Vengeance
For Il'Shihane, the Oni Genocide is not a historical footnote—it is a deeply personal wound. He, a half-Oni himself, was born amidst the turmoil of the genocide, after Lord Kargane's Hegemony headquarters faced near destruction, eliminating almost all the Oni. Forced to fight for Lord Kargane, Il'Shihane and his human mother suffered under the brutal rule of the Oni Hegemony. While the Hegemony trained him to follow orders, his mother secretly taught him his father's code of honor, creating a deep internal conflict. Now, under the Geas of The Chairman, Il'Shihane questions the ways of the Hegemony as he gains new insight into their true motives. This internal struggle and personal tragedy make him a complex and compelling antagonist.
